Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
