Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
