Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
