Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
