Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
