Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
