Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
