Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
