Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps.
