Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
