Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
