Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
