Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
