Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
