Be brilliant, play brilliant, and pickup craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
