Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
