Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
