Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
