Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
