Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French moved down south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
