Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
