Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
