Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
