Be smart, play brilliant, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
