Be smart, play smart, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
