Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
