Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
