Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
